Samuel Learns to Listen
Young Samuel is resting when he hears his name. He thinks Eli has called, so he goes to him. Eli tells him to return and rest.
When the call happens again, Samuel tries to understand. Eventually, Eli realizes that God is calling Samuel and helps him know how to respond.
Rabbi Moose notices both parts of the story: Samuel listens, and Eli helps. Careful listening sometimes means asking what we heard rather than guessing. If something puzzles us, a trusted grown-up can help us think it through. We can also practice listening to one another by putting down a toy, looking at the speaker, and waiting for a turn to answer.
For grown-ups: the source and wider story
